Solar 101

What is solar?

A solar system is, at its most basic, a power plant that creates electricity, fueled by light.

What components are in a solar system?

Typically, a solar system consists of panels (usually located on a roof with lots of sunlight and facing as south as possible), and an inverter (which changes the DC into AC so it can be used in our homes)

How long do systems usually last?

The components we use have 20 to 25 year warranties. But, projected system life is more along the lines of 30 to 40 years.

What is Net Energy Metering?

Net Energy Metering is an agreement between you and the utility company. It is a standard agreement that allows you to use the grid like a battery pack. When your system produces more electricity than you can consume, the excess is sent into the grid to be used by other people. The utility company gives you a credit that can then be used later when your consumption is more than what your system is producing. If you need more power, though, you aren’t limited like a batter pack – you can get whatever electricity you need.

Do I have to have the panels on my roof? (The only good roof is the front of my home, and I don’t want them there!)

No. One of the advantages of working with RayoSun is that we specialize in finding solutions that other companies don’t want to spend the time and effort on. For example, if the best place to put your panels would be on the front of your home, and you’d rather not, we can build a carport structure or canopy in your backyard and place the panels there instead.

What’s the deal with shade and the impact that everyone seems so concerned about?

This can get really technical really fast. But, in general terms, solar systems work best when all panels have full sunlight shining on them. Shading on just one panel can sometimes cut the total electricity production by a third. Therefore, it is important to keep as much sun on the entire system as possible at all times.
